Step Up 4 Kids 5K and Kids’ Fun Run—April 30, 2017
On Sunday morning, April 30th at the crack of dawn, committee members and volunteers for Step Up 4 Kids met at Onondaga Lake Park--Willow Bay, Sawmill Creek Shelter and began preparing for our first annual Step Up 4 Kids certified 5K and Kids’ ½ mile fun run. Volunteers from our community started setting up registration tables, water stations, and began planting pinwheels along the entire 5K route.
Soon over 200 participants began to gather for the opening ceremonies at 8:00AM. Boy Scout troop 107 from Baldwinsville presented the color guard, Tammy Fullerton sang the National Anthem, and the kids began to put on their racing t-shirts and bibs for the big fun run. Each child wore a bib with the number 699. This number represented the number of children who were provided services at McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Center in 2016. After each child completed the fun run, they received a blue pinwheel-- the national symbol of a happy and healthy childhood.
Next up was the start of the certified 5K. Racers took their marks and were off at 9:00AM. Following the race, awards were distributed. The top three male racers received framed artwork created by some of the children who were seen at the Center, and the top three female racers received gold, silver and brass pinwheel necklaces. There was plenty of food, water, drinks, and fruit to re-energize after the awards.
Children and family members were able to enjoy live music provided by Just Joe and a variety of children’s activities including a Home Depot build-it-yourself project, a tour of Liverpool’s Fire Department truck, and much more.
This family fun event marked the end of National Child Abuse Prevention Month and our Go Blue 4 Kids awareness campaign. It was a great way to have the community come together to help raise awareness and unite in a joint effort to end child abuse in Onondaga County.
A big thank you to our two race directors—Melissa Wenham and Nadia Tsai, along with all our sponsors, volunteers, staff and board members, family, and friends who helped make this a great event.
